The Waffle @ Bugis

Hi guys! I bought some pretty looking belgium waffles from bugis's basement today! Though they were a lil pricey at $2-2.50 per pc. I bought 6 for a slightly cheaper price of $10.60. Its my 1st time purchasing from them, and i just had a bite of one of the waffles, and found them pretty good, so here i am to review about them...

I know they look pretty simple, and you cant tell what flavours they are from the picture, they pretty much look plain flavoured right? But they are all stuffed waffles! They are not the crispy type of waffles, but somewhat like donuts, crispy sugar crystal crust layer on top, and fluffy texture with fillings... From bottom row, left waffle, i have taro, chocolate & thai custard. From top row, left waffle, i have mixed fruit, maple and red bean...

I chose the red bean one for tasting, it was nice to be able to bite onto the crispy sugar crust, and though they had red bean in it, this was not too sweet. Haven't tried the rest, but im assuming they will be good... Their thai custard's filling look like the one in the jars of the roadside crepés store that we see in bkk!

If you guys ever get bored of eating JCo cream filled donuts, or jollibean's or mr bean's pancakes, u guys can try this for novelty, but buy more, cause buying one is a lil pricey for me(partially cause belgium waffles are meant to be small). They have a website though, u guys can check them out at www.thewaffle.com.sg :) That's it for now.

Watami @ JCube

Hi guys! It has been a week since i last posted! So here's today's entry;

Had a date with lé bf at watami at level 1 of jcube, there is no reservation system here, but they have it at their star vista outlet. So the system here is pretty much like itacho sushi, at the main entrance there is a touch screen machine where you select the no. of pax dining in, then you get a queue number, though it was a friday night the crowd at jcube is usually quite mediocre, so i only waited 5 mins... I super love watami cause of their salads! And i have been bringing a number of my friend to try watami, partly also cause i had some promotional coupons. ;)

So here's our 1st dish, beef sukiyaki at $5 cause i had a discount coupon that jcube & imm co-launched in their food discount coupon magazine. It was worth every cent! Though the broth is really not for drinking, just to let the ingredients soak up the flavour so you can have some taste. But i super love the broth, so i always get a cup of hot water to dilute the salty sweet sukiyaki broth, just so i can drink it! I can add like 4 cups and it is still salty, but its the salty sweetness that makes me love this dish so much!

So with the sukiyaki, you can either get it with rice or noodles, there are a few selections, but the udon noodles we ordered, came with an egg, and cost us $4.30 extra. A little pricey just for plain udon and eggs, but you won't regret! The noodles were so chewy and had this bouncy texture when we cooked it in the sukiyaki broth.

So here's the 2nd dish, the signature watami half salad! They have two sizes, half and full, the usual price is about $7ish for half and $12ish for full. But i got the half salad at $2 cause of the coupon! ;) Major love with this dish, regardless of price. Since i 1st tried it, whenever i'm at watami, i sure will order.

Well, this 2 dishes were super worth as i had a coupon that gave me a combined price of $10 for both. The sashimi was so thick and smooth, you'll adore it! They didnt stinge with the portioning, and i counted 7 thick slices. Imagine one slice of watami being equivalent to 2-3 small slices you get at sushi express. The chicken wings were crispy, but they sliced one wing into 2 so it looks like there's alot, when it is actually just 4-5wings, but still worth at the discounted price i was paying for...

Last but not least, my $1 scoop of matcha ice cream, cant complain much since its my favourite flavor of ice cream plus its only $1. But of cause, paying $4+ for my tsujiri version is tons better than watami's, practically incomparable. :)

Hot tea is also served free and free-flow to all, kudos to that! :) In total, plus svc and gst charge, lé bf & i only spent $29.50 for this 5 dishes and a drink that he order. Cheap and awesome japanese food. Even without coupons, i will willingly pay full price cause of the value and portion of the food. Service staff are pretty pleasant here, i notice most customers here order the sukiyakis as they have 3 variants, chicken, beef, and korean army stew style...

That's all for now, will update soon!

Au Chocolat @ MBS

So I had a lunch date with <3 at Au Chocolat @ MBS today.. Have been wanting to try their bistro since last year, but only had a huge white chocolate macaroon at their cafe once, finally gotten the chance to try it today..

And this is what I ordered! Earl grey tea ($10) and the famous rainbow cake slice ($12)! Well, i would say if you haven't ate this before, then at least order it once to try.. I don't know how the typical rainbow cakes taste like, it's my 1st with au chocolat, & i like the fluffy and light vanilla sponge texture, not "jelat" at all, and they used cream cheese instead of whipped cream or icing, so it wasn't too sweet, and the colors weren't too overly vibrant as well.

Garlic Prawn Pesto Pasta ($24), lé bf ordered this, and he likes it, they were generous with the juicy and crisp prawns that were relatively huge.. So for that price it was quite worth. Tasted awesome too, mix of chilli flakes and pesto sauce, he finished the whole plate..

Last but not least, the amazing truffle fries($15)! Seen lots of blogger and friends rave about the truffle fries here. Its superbly good as compared to the others i've tried at PARK, Stranger's Reunion, Jamie Oliver's, Anthesis Boulangerie. AC had way chunkier fries, I had one that was as long as a 15cm ruler(not exaggerating), and they were on average 1cm (+-) thick, crispy outside, fluffy inside, great match with the mayo, but would prefer tartar sauce, bbq sauce was kinda redundant for me.. Didn't finished this though, as the cake made me full, so i got the waitress to do a takeaway box for me..

Overall, lil pricey but still affordable and worth for the food portion and taste, 2 drinks, 1 cake, 1 side, 1 main, cost us $80.. I love the ambience! Definitely will come again! Its located at MBS level 1, at the far end above rasapura foodcourt, operates mon-sun 10am-11pm (6688 7227 for reservations)
Look at the choo-choo train hanging on the wall! Even kids love them!

Just an update as I went back the other day to try this, devil's chocolate cake! Awesomeness!

Miam Miam Café @ Bugis & Westgate

So yesterday night, I headed down to the Miam Miam @ Bugis Junction for a meal with my polymates.. I suggested this place, cause i wanted to try the awesome looking Soufflé!

Above is the savory baked soufflé rice that my bff ordered, if you love scrambled eggs or steamed eggs, you'll definitely love this! Underneath the smooth egg custard was some awesome tasting rice with bunaji mushrooms, for a $15+ meal, it was worth every single cent..

Then a friend ordered their "modern" yaki, smelled like tako balls cause of the bonito flakes. I like it because of the omelette on top of the pasta, and cause it tasted like tako ball pasta... For $15+, the portion was enough for 2 girls to share..

The miam miam spagetti is their signature dish, so basically it tasted like a non-spicy version of aglio olio with a hint of the bacon's aroma, but again it was a large portion, good for guys. If you like runny eggs, you'll probably like this dish, cause after mixing it with the pasta, the yolk made it gooey.. XD

My friend wanted something light, so apparently the menu has salad A and salad B, so you'll have to check with the waiter for the salad of the day. So she got this french salad for $7.50.. Just a salad, nothing much to rave about, but portion was pretty small as compared to places like watami with equivalent pricings for their half salad..

Last but not least, the famous matcha soufflé! I ordered this at $9.90, and the presentation and temperature was superb.. Though it was a tad too sweet even for a sweet tooth like me, and the texture that day was a lil too runny in the middle, but i still love it! (Hoshino's version is superb too)

Overall, this is a place with pastel colored furniture, and cute booth seats, for pastas, soufflé and matcha drinks and dessert. Miam miam is located at level 2 of Bugis junction, once you come out of the escalator, walked towards Levi's direction and you will find it just in front of cottonon..

They don't take reservations, so you'll have to queue, i waited a good 0.5hr, and they don't "seat you in" until you have full attendance from your group, so when they are busy, the staff who attends to the people in the queue tend to be quite rude. Water is charged at 50cents per pax, but its refillable with a lemon slice in the flask.. Price range below $20 per pax if you only order 1 dish and ice water.

I went back last week with my colleagues, riz au curry is an awesome dish, awesome jap curry with my favourite sausage, brocolli and egg, they had a variation that combined the soufflé, it was an equivalently awesome dish too, i preferred the soufflé version as i'm an egg addict.

This is their chicken teriyaki spaghetti, apart from the not so cooked noodles which was kinda hard, other than that this dish was a fairly huge portion, and smelled so fragrant with the pork pieces that tasted like ham, and the leeks were superb too!

This time i tried their other desserts, matcha pancake with vanilla softee, cost us $10.80, but was superb, melted butter spreaded on top, warm pancake to match with the icecream! Though the matcha flavour here wasn't as strong as i hoped it to be.

Varlhona chocolate soufflé, same portion as the matcha one, pretty small but worth it, the chocolate wasnt too sweet, it had this bitter sweet taste, not as sweet as the matcha one I had previously.

So if you prefer something "cakier" and not so soft, you can try their version of molten lava cake, which was served with ice cream, the picture in the menu deceived us, i thought that one plate that costs us $9+ would come with 4 cakes. End up 1 small lil cake with vanilla ice cream only. But nonetheless still quite nice, not too sweet, but i wont order again, rather have their pancakes.

老王砂煲小厨 Lau Wang Claypot Delights @ Serangoon

Hi all! Gonna do some changes to my blogging format, think the previous post too much words too little pictures, I think you guys also don't wanna read right? XD

So anyways, I promise to post here at least once a week on places I've been to, that I found the food yummy, cheap and worth going again and again.

So my mum went searching for new places to eat, and found this 老王砂煲小厨 on Danielfooddiary.com dated December 2013. So basically, its situated at Blk 263 Serangoon Central Drive, #01-43, Singapore 550263 and as mentioned by Daniel its about 10 minute walk from Serangoon MRT. Operating hours is 10.30am to 9.30pm everyday. So its at the corner of the block as the name of the cafe suggests 旺角aka Lucky Corner, and there's 3 stores, a noodle store open in the day before 5pm, a drink store and the claypot store. Its a fairly small and open corner cafe, and I guess during peak hours you might really have to queue and wait, but I went on a thursday night at 8.30pm, basically all the food are freshly cooked on the spot, so you' have to wait a good 15-20mins for sizzling hot claypot food.

So they offer quite a number of claypot dishes at this cafe, but I wouldn't say its a large range of food, less than 30 variants but ample.

Slice fish with bittergourd, this dish would be good for those who can't take spicy, the fish is fresh, the sauce is flavourful with the onions. It's cheap too, $4.50.

And this is one of their signature dish, their herbal frog leg soup, one frog portion selling at just $8! The soup had numerous portions of red dates and wolfberries which made the soup pretty sweet, and lots of herbs but not the too bitter kind, quite a refreshing soup to drink I would say. The frog meat was so fresh! As if the chef killed the frog on the spot and threw them into the boiling hot soup! Damn soft and succulent, zero fishy smell!

And well, my family loves organs pretty much, so when we saw that they had pig kidney and liver herbal soup, we immediately ordered it as well, $5 only! What it taste like? Like when you drink bak kut teh with kidney and liver, just that minus the pepper spicyness and plus all the yummy herbs, and the sweetness of the numerous dates and berries. Superb soup! Wished they had those free soup re-fills like those bak kut teh stores...

So I suggested to order this dish, their sambal seafood claypot going at $7 for a portion, cause i absolutely love spicy food! This dish is superb lo! Its like eating teppan tofu at tzechar store but minus the egg and tofu, plus the sambal and chilli padi... Not for the faint-hearted, cause with the chilli padi chopped and fried into the sambal gravy, this was really quite spicy, I had running nose throughout eating this pot of yummy seafood... But the gravy so nice, I couldn't resist drinking it, though if you're on diet better not do it, cause there was quite a fair bit of chilli oil...

Supposedly, this dish on the menu has sambal with it, but we requested for them to make it non-spicy, so here I have garlic and mince meat fried kang kong at $4, cheaper than tzechar stores, and its nice and fresh.

This was a last minute order, as I saw a cup of hot barley in the nearby tables. So when I realised it was homemade, I just had to order it. I'm not sure if it was because its the last 3 cups of barley for that day, or all along the barley standard is quite there, but this was thick and silky with barley bits at the bottom of the cup, and not "jelat". Didn't regret ordering this, it was $1.20 by the way.

So here's what my family of four ordered, with 3 bowls of rice, and a drink, it only amounted to $31.20 in total. Cheap or cheap? I definitely would come here again to try their other dishes, like claypot eggplants, or even their pig trotters, or their claypot sesame chicken. Basically some of their dishes come in spicy variants, and some come in non-spicy variants, but even if it is spicy, you can request for them to make it non-spicy, they are quite flexible.

XOXO,
CheryL

I went there again last week, and tried their other superb dishes!
This sambal minced meat brinjal was superb, i could finish the whole claypot by myself XD

The sesame chicken in this claypot was superbly juicy and tender, a yummy dish as well!

Pardon the pretty blur picture of this sesame oil claypot of pig kidney and liver, but this dish was pretty average, still prefer the herbal soup version.

I know the looks of this salted vegetable like machiam canned food, but this store's is not bad, and it only cost us 1 buck, and it was fragrant and not too salty!

Waffle Slayer @ Kampong Bahru

So I suggested to my friends yesterday, to try out Waffles Slayer, just beside Stranger's Reunion, and yet we can try both menus at the same time! Awesome or what?

Basically we each ordered a dish plus 2 sides, so we got to try 8 different dishes since there were 6 of us, perks of having a larger group to share food with! "WS" will stand for food from the Waffle Slayer Menu and "SU" will stand for food from the Strangers Reunion menu. From the top left picture in clock-wise direction, we ordered, red velvet waffle(WS), truffle fries(WS), a maple syrup waffle(SU), matcha waffle(WS), fluffy crepes(SU), truffle sweet potato chips(SU), banana brulee waffle(WS), Eggs on toast(SU).

Food review time!

Matcha Buttermilk Waffle: The waffles here were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the vanilla bean ice cream that came with it was superb, not those ordinary vanilla ice cream we get at cheap buffet places, the red beans were rather tasteless(not sure if it was because the ice cream's sweetness covered it), the waffles were not as green as I imagined, they came out rather toasted in color, like toasted bread crust. There were a few pieces of mandarin oranges I guess for color decoration purposes, cause it was a slight mismatch with the waffles? But the green tea aroma and taste was certainly lacking for a green tea lover like me. Overall, I guess its a dish to try, but I may not order it a second time. (I suggested this place cause I wanted to try this! And not many places in SG offers this, I loved the one I had in Bangkok at Kalpapruek Central World though...)

Red Velvet Buttermilk Waffle: Same superb vanilla ice cream, with lots of chocolate fudge drizzle and pistachio. Same waffle texture, though the red velvet color didn't quite show on the waffle, again it was kinda toasted brown, like normal chocolate waffle color. There were the few pieces of mandarin oranges for deco too... I'm really not a fan of chocolate waffles, but since its the only chocolate waffle on the menu, i guess the chocolate lovers will love it... (Again, i still preferred the one I had at Kalpapruek, cause it was served with cream cheese and strawberry compote)

Banana Brulee Buttermilk Waffle: This was superb, same ice cream, but there was caramelized banana and walnut crunch, matches the waffle well. Definitely, a must order for banana lovers... :)

Maple Syrup waffle: According to my friend, this is SU's signature dish, maple syrup drizzled lavishly on a plain buttermilk waffle, with some blueberries, strawberries, and bananas. A simple and conventional dish, no added frills... A must order, for those who have yet tasted their waffles.

Fluffy Savoury Crepes: Do not order this, if you have high standards of what a crepe should look and taste like... The crepes were a tad too thick, and for the $12.50 my friend was paying for this, versus paying $11.90 for the maple syrup waffle, the portion was way too meagre, like two small slaps of thin pancake with sour cream, beetroot relish and a side of salad, which my picture apparently doesn't show it clearly enough. The taste of the whole dish was weak, definitely not my cup of tea.

Eggs on Toast: As the name suggests, scrambled eggs layed on 2 pieces of toasts, generous portions of egg that was fully spreaded on the whole toast. Weak in flavour, but for $10.50, I guess I would have expected slightly better taste?

Truffle Fries: Superb fries, for $12.90 the portion was big enough for 6 of us to share, and it was so good with the tartar sauce that accompanied it. The only downside to me was the type of fries they used, they used shoestring fries like mcdonalds so the fries were not that fluffy.

Truffle Sweet Potato Chips: We've never heard of this dish, so we decided to order it. The color showed well, the chips were thin enough that made it so crispy, matches with the tartar sauce that accompanied it. But other than the truffle aroma, it pretty much tasted like regular potato chips? For the same price and portion as the fries, my friends and I would not order this dish again, we practically left half the bowl full.

I've not tried the other savoury dishes in SU's menu, so i would definitely give it a 2nd try to try more of their breakfast menu. Overall, nice ambience, ok service. I went on a saturday noon, best is before 12pm, that way you'll get a table pretty quickly. On average, my friends and I spent about $19-21 each inclusive of GST & service charge, so the cost is pretty reasonable.

If you guys need directions, Outram Park MRT, do exit from the purple line side, it's Exit F. Once out of the exit, SGH should be just behind you, before your cross the traffic light you should see the row of shophouse that has a mookata pig signage, stranger's reunion and waffles slayer is just down that row of shophouses, walk to the traffic light to cross over to the road where the shophouses are.

XOXO,
CheryL

Hi!

I guess I have been cafe-hopping most recently with my friends, and have been trying out some new cafes and constantly posting pictures of food up. My dear friend (you know who you are if you read this) texted me to set up a food blog, and its the second time he mentioned it to me, so yeah, here I am finally on the 1st post of my new and first food blog creation. Before I start posting up my reviews on the places I have been to, I'll just put a disclaimer here...

Before I had this blog, I would always share awesome food places with my friends and in a way or another try to "sell" the cafes' food to them. So now that I'm doing this blog up, this blog would be an avenue for me to share my experiences with the rest of the people, and I'm not paid, so these are just my own opinions. As the saying goes, "To each his own", my opinions may not be accurate, and what I like about a certain place or food may not favor you and vice versa. Therefore, do take my honest opinions with a pinch of salt, I mean no harm even if I don't like a certain place/food, it probably just doesn't suit my palate, or maybe I am just picky... :)

XOXO,
CheryL
